The Thing, from John Carpenter’s 1981 classic film. I drew this charakart a while ago, last year. I’d like to drive this gory one, buzzing around other karts.

Kart: Triforce Kart

Link, from the Legend of Zelda series (The Legend of Zelda’s 26th anniversary is today). I started playing the first game in its initial 1986 release on the Famicom Disk System and it has remained a favourite since. I still possess the disk’s game manual and am partial to its character art, rather than any later game’s designs. This charakart is based on this original Legend of Zelda artwork.

The much missed Freddie Mercury, driving a vehicle based on Queen’s crest, a logo which was designed by Freddie himself early in the band’s career.

Chara: Black Jack

Kart: Hyoutan-Tsugi Kart

Black Jack, the mercenary surgeon in Tezuka Osamu’s eponymous manga, started in 1973. The vehicle is inspired by a character in Tezuka’s star system, a comical patched calabash.

Kart: Kartzenjammer

A Katzenjammer Kids charakart, based on the characters and universe created by Rudolph Dirks in 1897 and long drawn by Harold H. Knerr. These comic strips were still running in French magazines when I was a child in the early 80’s.

Chara: Takeshi “Beat” Kitano

Kart: Office Kitano Kart

Filmmaker, painter, author and comedian Kitano Takeshi, whose show Takeshi’s Castle was a childhood favourite. I highly recommend his films Kikujiro no Natsu, Hana-Bi, Sonatine and A Scene at the Sea.
